Visiting Missouri
Discover Missouri Attractions and History
Many of our Missouri Attractions are centered around our rich history. Our grassy plains and forested mountains hosted the pre-historic Mississippian culture whose mounds can be found here to this day. The Mississippi River on our eastern border served as a highway for the French trappers who founded St. Louis in 1764. After the Louisiana Purchase in 1803, Missouri played a central role in the westward expansion of the United States, earning us the nickname “Mother of the West.” The Pony Express, Oregon Trail, Santa Fe Trail, and California Trail all began here.
Missouri attractions include being the home to Anheuser-Busch, brewer of Budweiser beer, while the Missouri Rhineland and Ozarks give us Missouri wine. Our state counts President Harry S. Truman, Mark Twain, Walt Disney, and Chuck Berry as famous sons. We’re also the birthplace of ragtime music, Kansas City jazz, and the St. Louis Blues.
